PvP, skulls and death

Master Runes is a retro PvP world: outside protection zones you can attack other players, and the classic skull system marks and punishes those who kill without a reason.

Who can fight

  • You can attack players anywhere except in protection zones (temples, depots, houses and other safe places).
  • Protection level 8: characters below level 8 cannot attack players and cannot be attacked by them.
  • Secure mode (on by default, in the combat buttons) stops you from attacking unmarked players by accident. Switch to PvP mode to attack them.
  • Secure mode only stops attacks aimed at an unmarked player. Area spells, area runes and fields hit everyone in the area, as in the old days, and give you a white skull if they hurt an unmarked player. Your summons' attacks and kills count as yours.
  • Party members and guild mates never get a skull for hitting each other, and kills in a guild war do not count as unjustified.
  • Killing players gives no experience.

Skulls

SkullMeaning
WhiteYou attacked an unmarked player who had not attacked you, directly or with an area spell, rune, field or summon. It lasts 15 minutes from your last attack on an unmarked player (or from your last unjustified kill).
RedToo many unjustified kills (see below). Lasts 30 days.
YellowOnly you see it, while you have a skull: an unmarked player who attacked you first. Players you attacked first and who fight back stay unmarked: that is self-defence.
GreenA member of your party.
  • Attacking a player who has not attacked you makes you PZ locked and keeps you in fight: you cannot enter protection zones or log out for 15 minutes after your last attack on an unmarked player. Any other fight blocks logging out for 60 seconds.
  • Attacking back a player who attacked you first (yellow skull for you) is self-defence: it gives you no skull.
  • Killing an unmarked player who did not attack you is an unjustified kill. After an unjustified kill you stay in fight and PZ locked for 15 minutes.

Red skull and the automatic ban

2030 daysAccount banned for 7 days
  • The red skull lasts 30 days, and every new unjustified kill that reaches a limit starts the 30 days again.
  • A red-skulled character who dies loses all the equipment, even with every blessing or an amulet of loss.
  • There is no black skull on Master Runes.
  • There is no orange (revenge) skull either: killing the player who killed you is unjustified unless he still has a skull.
  • Automatic ban: 20 unjustified kills in 30 days ban the whole account for 7 days. The character is told and disconnected at once, and logging in shows the ban and its end date. A permanent ban is never shortened.

The Frags window

Press Frags in the menu grid (on phones: ☰ menu › Frags). It shows your unjustified kills of the Last 24 hours, Last 7 days and Last 30 days against the red skull limit of each, with a bar that empties as the oldest kill gets closer to no longer counting, and the time left on your skull. Only unjustified kills of players count.

Dying

  • You lose a share of your experience that grows with your level, and the same share of your skill and magic level progress.
  • Each blessing reduces that loss by 8% (up to 7 blessings: 56%), and being promoted reduces it by another 30% (86% at most). The blessings window of the side panel shows the exact reduction the server applies to you.
  • Without blessings your backpack always falls into your corpse and every other item has a small chance to fall too. Each blessing lowers those chances, and with 5 or more blessings, or wearing an amulet of loss (it is used up), you keep all your items.
  • A red skull overrides all of this: everything you wear is lost.
  • Deaths in PvP arenas cost nothing.

Blessings

  • There are seven: The Wisdom of Solitude, The Spark of the Phoenix, The Fire of the Suns, The Spiritual Shielding, The Embrace of Master Runes, Heart of the Mountain and Blood of the Mountain.
  • Buy them from the blessing NPCs or in the Store (Consumables › Blessings). Each death uses up one charge of every blessing you have (the Store also sells them in packs of several charges).
  • Up to level 21 you have every blessing for free and do not lose them when you die (adventurer's blessing).
  • Twist of Fate, the PvP blessing of the modern game, does not exist on a retro PvP world.
  • The cross icon in the side panel shows how many you have; click it to see which.
